Reuse and versioning
Four features here look similar from the toolbar and do quite different jobs. Choosing the wrong one is not damaging, but it does mean the thing you saved is not where you go looking for it.
Snippets — a block you reuse
Section titled “Snippets — a block you reuse”A snippet is one block, saved by itself. Hover any block, choose the save icon in its toolbar, and it goes into the snippet library for the whole service.
Use it for the piece you rebuild every time: a footer with your real address, a styled call-to-action button, a signature.
A snippet is a copy taken at save time. Inserting it into a new email does not create a link back — editing the snippet later leaves every email that already used it untouched.
Templates — a whole email you reuse
Section titled “Templates — a whole email you reuse”The template library holds complete emails. Templates in the toolbar opens it, and you can save the email you are editing into it.
The library has two tiers. Templates that ship with the platform are marked System and are available in every service; you cannot edit or delete them. Templates your service saves belong to that service.
Starting a new email from a library template copies it. Same as snippets, there is no live link afterwards.
Versions — a restorable point in time
Section titled “Versions — a restorable point in time”Create Version takes a snapshot of the email as it stands. Version History lists the snapshots and lets you revert to one.
Versions belong to one email. They are not a way to share anything; they are a way to get back to a state you liked.
Cut one before you start a rework, and again when you finish something worth keeping. The button is deliberately separate from Save — saving happens constantly, versioning is a decision.
Edit history — the record of what changed
Section titled “Edit history — the record of what changed”Edit history is the automatic log of changes to an email. You do not create entries; they accumulate.
Use it to answer “when did this change and who did it”, which versions cannot tell you, because a version only records the states somebody chose to mark.
Choosing between them
Section titled “Choosing between them”| You want to | Use |
|---|---|
| Reuse one block across emails | A snippet |
| Reuse a whole email as a starting point | The template library |
| Be able to get back to today’s version next week | Create Version |
| Find out what changed and when | Edit history |
What none of them do
Section titled “What none of them do”None of these keep two things in sync. Every one of them copies. If your footer address changes, you update the snippet and then every email that already used it, one at a time.
That is worth knowing before you build a set of emails around a shared block, because the maintenance is manual and it does not announce itself.
Related
Section titled “Related”Reuse with snippets and templates covers saving and inserting. Version an email covers cutting and restoring versions.
